Kunyang Beef Noodle Restaurant is right near Kunyang Station Exit 4. Just cross the street, and it's very close. If you're driving, there's parking farther away.
The inside seating isn't very big, but during after-work hours, students just happen to finish school at the same time, so the place gets packed with people after work.
The dining environment inside is pretty good. The floors and tables are clean, and the chairs are also fairly new.
This beef noodle restaurant is very famous, everyone in the area knows about it, and it has been featured on major media and food shows.
This time, we went for their signature Braised Beef Noodles. We didn't order the Clear Broth today, but maybe next time we can give it a try. I also saw that many people recommended the Meatball Soup, even though we didn't order it this time.
Before we came here, we already knew the beef noodles would be a bit spicy, so we ordered ours at mild spice.
Side Dish Area (小菜區)
You can order the side dishes first, and they'll bring them to your table. You'll pay after the beef noodles are served.
We ordered tofu skin, dried tofu, seaweed, and braised eggs. The flavors of all the braised dishes were pretty good, but I personally felt the sauce was a bit too salty.
Signature Braised Beef (Beef Tendon & Beef with Tripe) (招牌紅燒牛肉半筋半肉加牛肚 )
This bowl of noodles is really big. We ordered a small size with a little spicy, but later we found out there's also a no-menu mild spicy option.
This bowl costs 240 TWD dollars. There's no menu with prices, but the price list is on the wall. The portions are quite big, so if you come alone and order a small bowl, you'll be very full.
The beef is cooked really tender, melting in your mouth with a soft, easy bite. The beef tendon is also braised perfectly, making it chewy and flavorful.
The beef tripe stew is pretty good — it's soft and has a nice texture. Overall, the beef noodles aren't bad, but they don't really have a strong flavor. It just tastes spicy, and the broth feels like it's mostly just water—lacking any rich taste.
Pickled mustard greens are available, but they have a strong and sour flavor. Use them in moderation.
Minced Pork Sauce Dry Noodles (肉燥乾拌麵)
Luckily, we ordered this bowl of noodles because honestly, I find the beef noodles quite ordinary. However, I actually prefer the zhajiangmian (fried sauce noodles). The flavor of the zhajiang is quite salty and strong, and they give a generous amount of sauce. It was pretty good to eat.
There are wide noodles and thin noodles. I ordered the thin noodles because they help the fried bean paste mix more evenly with the noodles.
The soybean paste noodles are really delicious, in my opinion even better than beef noodles. I didn't finish the beef noodles, but I ate all the soybean paste noodles.
The place next to us is cooking beef, and I have to say their beef is really tender and delicious. However, the broth isn't great — it's mainly just spicy.
Kunyang Beef Noodle Restaurant Reviews
Good Points: The beef noodles come in a huge bowl and are great value for money. The beef and beef tendons are super tender and really delicious. The broth is spicy and full of flavor, very satisfying. The soybean paste noodles are also tasty, even though they're a bit salty, I finished the whole bowl!
Bad Points: The beef noodle soup actually doesn't have much flavor, it just tastes like water, and you mainly feel the spiciness. Without the broth, the beef is pretty good on its own, but I don't really recommend this place.
